Pre-season Fun Training in Tekapo, March 20/21st 2010

For the first time, we've decided to have a pre-season training weekend on the outdoor rink in Tekapo. This is designed to give everyone, beginners and experienced players alike, a chance to cover and practice the basics of skating, stick handling, passing, shooting and positional play. The training is on their CONCRETE rink (they won't have laid the ice yet) on inline skates. If the weather isn't kind to us, we'll still use the rink but wearing trainers and using their street hockey gear.

  • The cost for the weekend is only $70 per person up to a maximum of 20 people. This includes:
  • 2 nights accommodation (Friday and Saturday) at the Lakeside Backpackers
  • 3 rink sessions (Saturday 9-10am and 4-5pm and Sunday 9-10am)
  • Inline skate hire if you don't have your own
  • 2 off rink sessions covering ice hockey fitness (times tbc)
  • We will pool transport so, remember to add about $40 for fuel plus your food and drink costs.
  • If you want to book your own accommodation, the cost for the on and off ice training is only $30!

This is a fantastic opportunity for beginners to give it a go, intermediates to get up to speed or experts to refresh your skills before the league starts. Numbers are strictly limited and a third of the places are already booked so please confirm your interest asap. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. There will be a number of fundraisers for both the Women's League and the Canterbury Rep Team throughout the season. If you would like to help organise any of the events, please speak to Deb, Anna Loverage or Verity.

Southern Cross
2nd weekend in September each year.

If you like playing social hockey with a competitive twist then you'll love our Southern Cross Tournament. Originally designed as a cross Tasman competition, over the years the Australians have dropped out (too many loses!) and we've turned it into a fun, sociable New Zealand tournament. The last 2 years have been held at the amazing outdoor rink at Tekapo and have been combined with a weekend of socialising, hockey, hot pools and skiing. Check out the photos in the gallery. An event not to be missed!

Southern Cross tournament was held again in the beautiful setting of Lake Tekapo. With stunning clear, crisp mornings, what better way to start the day than with a game of ice hockey on the outdoor rink. With the Southern team pulling out at the last minute we were left with just two evenly matched Canterbury teams. With the extra ice time now available, we invited some locals, Dwayne Bell (the rink Manager) and team family members to join in for some ‘friendly' short games - even allowing some budding future Ice blacks (the under 10s!) to play.

This was an excellent tournament played in a fantastic setting. And to cap it all off we skied at Roundhill in the afternoon and got back to relax in the hot pools before tea.

Game one: The Stingrays got off to an early lead with 2 goals one from Hailey Murphy and the other from Krysti Woodyear-Smith. Kat Lines of the Thunderbirds scored in the last 10 minutes to bring the score at the end of the first period to 2-1. The second period's only goal was scored by Kate Knegt of the Thunderbirds to bring the game to 2 all. It was all on in the third period with the Stingrays having 4 unanswered goals 2 more from Hailey one from Jill Boul and one from Julee Binns.
Final score was Stingrays 6 Thunderbirds 2.

Game two: Whilst a feisty game neither team could get an early goal and at the end of the first period there were no goals on the board. The second period ended with the score 1-0 The first goal was scored by Sarah Loveridge with 7min remaining. Krysti Woodyear-Smith of the Stingrays scored their first goal 9 minutes into the third period and the Thunderbirds replied 2 minutes later with a goal from Kat Lines.
